A new question: how should the shoe close?
The Air Jordan XXXIII shifted attention to an action most players perform without thinking: tightening their shoes. Instead of making a conventional set of laces the visible center of the upper, it built its identity around a different fastening experience. That gives the 2018 model a distinctive place in the mainline sequence, even before any colorway is considered.
Tate Kuerbis drew on space suits and made the adjustment system visible. Nike’s design interview explains that functional inspiration.
What FastFit actually does
A forefoot pull tightens FastFit’s cables; side loops release them. FlightSpeed and Zoom Air sit underfoot. Nike launch information.
That distinction is important because “laceless” can be misunderstood. The word describes the absence of the familiar exposed lace-and-knot arrangement. It does not mean that the foot is held without any tensioning system. A user still performs an action to secure the shoe, but the action and visible hardware have changed.
The design makes that interaction part of the aesthetic. Labels, pull points and exposed mechanisms can communicate purpose as well as style. In this reading, the XXXIII is not merely a shoe with an unusual accessory attached; the way the wearer engages with it helps define the object.
For a historical account, explaining the action is more useful than calling it futuristic and moving on. “Futuristic” is a visual judgment. A manual pull-and-release closure is a specific construction choice that can be described, compared and documented.
The release dates need a regional distinction
Tech Pack reached Greater China October 1, 2018; Future of Flight’s main global launch followed October 18; Visible Utility arrived November 1. Original release calendar.
Three original-period colors to understand the design
Future of Flight presents the mechanism against a light exterior with contrasting accents. Visible Utility changes the visual balance. Their different treatments make the operating parts easier to compare: the same design can draw attention to several points depending on how color is distributed.

Utility Blackout is the third selection, released November 29, 2018. The contemporary release report documents it. Its darker treatment makes a useful comparison with the brighter opening presentation: the mechanism remains part of the design even when the color treatment is more restrained.

These three colors were selected to show the model’s initial visual range. Tech Pack is also an original release and is essential to the regional chronology, even though it is not one of the three detailed selections.
A different group of athletes, then a collaboration
Victor Oladipo and Maya Moore were identified as leading athletes for the model as Westbrook developed his own signature series. Subtle Air Jordan III references remained in the tongue and heel branding. ESPN’s launch reporting connects those sporting and design contexts.
The combination matters. The mainline franchise continued to draw from Michael Jordan’s history while being represented by active players with their own careers. Its meaning was no longer limited to reenacting one former player’s season. A historical reference and a present-day performance role could occupy the same shoe.
Travis Scott’s Army Olive collaboration followed on February 14, 2019. Contemporary release coverage establishes that later chapter. It should not be presented as a 2018 launch-day OG color, even though it belongs to the model’s broader history.
The XXXIII’s most useful legacy is the priority it gave to interaction. The XXXI and XXXII made early-Jordan references easy to see; the XXXIII made the act of adjustment central to the experience. Understanding that shift gives the model a clearer identity than treating it only as the “Jordan without laces” or only as a platform for a later collaboration.
The lower-cut SE arrived in 2019
The XXXIII’s lower-cut variation was sold as SE and is also cataloged as Low SE. White Cement, CD9560-106, launched April 4, 2019. The retail announcement identifies the opening color; GOAT’s PF record corroborates the date for CD9561-106.
Guo Ailun’s White/Teal SE, CD9561-103, is also documented for April 4 in the regional rollout. Contemporary coverage places it alongside that opening period. White Cement should therefore not be treated as the sole first color in every market.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Air Jordan XXXIII lace itself electronically?
No. FastFit is manual.
Is Tech Pack included in the three-color selection?
It is discussed separately because of its regional release.
Who designed the Air Jordan XXXIII?
Tate Kuerbis is the credited designer.
Is the Travis Scott edition an original 2018 launch color?
No. It is a later collaboration from 2019 and belongs in a separate part of the model’s timeline.
