The Nike Kobe X is easier to underestimate in a photograph than the dramatic IX. Its main launch silhouette returned to a low collar and a comparatively restrained upper. Look below that surface, however, and the tenth signature becomes a study in combining technologies rather than making one material dominate the entire story.
Nike unveiled the X in January 2015. The original platform paired Lunarlon with heel Zoom Air, while a later Elite branch introduced a high-cut Flyknit upper. Nike Kobe Vault: Kobe X Those two silhouettes share a number, but they should not be treated as one visually interchangeable product.
Eric Avar and the hybrid idea
Eric Avar designed the X. The launch incorporated Free-inspired grooves and an open-weave textile inspired by sharkskin. The first 5 AM Flight release was February 7, 2015. Nike Japan introduces the Kobe X
The hybrid construction invites a different reading from the VII’s removable alternatives. The X brought several ideas into one platform: cushioning, flexibility, texture and grip were meant to cooperate rather than be selected as separate modes.
Its partly translucent lower section makes the sole visually important. Instead of disappearing under a loud upper, the base becomes part of the design’s identity. The eye moves from the relatively quiet textile down toward the material surrounding the foot.

This is why the X should not be dismissed as an uncomplicated return to an earlier low-top. Its outline is familiar, but the balance between upper and sole has changed. Minimal-looking products can contain substantial development without displaying every decision as a dramatic external feature.
Three original colors
5 AM Flight, 2015: the blue launch palette refers to water and Bryant’s early-morning high-dive story. It gives the new silhouette a personal narrative without relying on Lakers purple and gold.
All-Star, 2015: part of Nike’s February All-Star collection, this edition places the X in the shared visual moment of that season’s showcase. Nike Japan 2015 All-Star collection It is useful to read it alongside the original launch color: the same model could represent Bryant’s individual story and a broader basketball event.
Blackout, 2015: the purple-dominant original provides a darker interpretation of the mesh silhouette. Kobe Archive: Kobe X catalog Compared with 5 AM Flight, it changes the mood while leaving the restrained panel arrangement visible. These three selections represent the original low platform rather than mixing every Elite construction into one color list.
Elite expands the family
The Kobe X Elite brought the high-cut Flyknit idea back into the generation. Elite Low versions also existed during 2015, documented by contemporary Nike-store release information. Nike Kobe 10 Elite Low Draft Pick release details

That sequence demonstrates how much the signature line had expanded since the earliest models. A single annual number could encompass a mesh low, a knitted high and a knitted low. The title on a listing therefore carries real historical information; ‘Kobe 10’ alone is only the beginning of an identification.
The IX had made a high Flyknit silhouette the central introduction. The X reversed that emphasis by launching with a low textile model and allowing Elite to supply another interpretation. Read in order, the two generations show a conversation between forms rather than an inconsistent design direction.
The 2026 Protro chapter
Nike scheduled Halo for August 23, 2026, with revised mesh and traction, Cushlon 3.0 and full-length Zoom Strobel. Flyknit editions with ZoomX were announced for 2027. Nike Basketball debuts the Kobe 10 Protro
At the October 2026 research cutoff, the announced Halo debut date had passed; the 2027 roadmap remained future-facing. A launch announcement establishes the intended product chronology, not current inventory in every region.

The technical change is substantial even where the exterior remains familiar. It reinforces the central distinction in this model’s history: a shared silhouette can contain different underfoot architecture. The original X belongs to the hybrid experimentation of 2015; the Protro belongs to the later effort to carry that silhouette into a new playing era.
