Popcorn, characters and a sequence of reveals: at Extra Butter, the language of cinema extends beyond decoration. It offers a way to organize anticipation around a release. A sneaker can become part of a story, with the store helping people discover how its pieces fit together.
The idea began in 2007, combining interests in film, fashion and culture. Following Extra Butter means looking at how that approach works at three different scales: the boutique’s identity, its projects with footwear manufacturers and the design of its physical spaces.
A shop with a film vocabulary
Extra Butter describes itself as a New York boutique and independent lifestyle brand. Cinema is an explicit part of that identity, rather than an association imposed on its products from outside. It helps explain why the shop often supplies a narrative context for a release.
There is a difference between placing a familiar reference on a product and building its presentation around that reference. In the latter case, packaging, shoe details and the way a collection is introduced can work together. That is particularly rewarding for enthusiasts who enjoy noticing small clues in a collaboration.
Five shoes in conversation
The ASICS Death List 5 project, documented in 2013, brought together five models with names including Cottonmouth, Copperhead and Snake Charmer. Its selection included the GEL-SAGA, GEL-LYTE III, GEL-LYTE V, GT-COOL and GEL-EPIRUS.
That variety matters to the store’s history. Rather than concentrating the concept on one model, the project distributed it across different silhouettes. Someone following the collection could see relationships between the pairs without expecting identical construction.
The collection also illustrates work that goes beyond choosing a color. A recognizable identity has to survive while each shoe retains its own character. The individual object and the conversation between all five become equally useful ways of approaching the project.
Returning to Queens in 2020
The October 2020 Long Island City opening brought the concept to 22-03 Jackson Avenue. In the announcement, co-founder Ankur Amin connected the Queens location with the experience he and his brother Nick had gained at their uncle’s sneaker shop during the 1980s.
The opening concept included cinematic references and a concessions area with candy, drinks and popcorn. Family memory and the brand’s visual identity therefore appeared in the same chapter. The space was presented as more than an additional sales floor.
That connection makes the story accessible even to readers who do not follow releases. A shop can carry memories of work, neighborhood and professional beginnings. Extra Butter’s Queens announcement made that relationship explicit.
Following the white rabbit
The 2021 White Rabbit collaboration with Saucony returned to the character from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Its Shadow 6000 paired a comparatively restrained exterior with psychedelic packaging and insoles, while a rabbit replaced the familiar figure on the tongue label.
It neatly expresses the kind of curiosity Extra Butter encourages: looking past the first impression. The boutique’s contribution can be understood through this movement between narrative, image and physical object. Knowing the references makes the shoes more interesting to examine, whether or not someone intends to buy every pair.
