A sneaker inspired by Woody and Buzz Lightyear might look like a playful exception in the release calendar. Within BAIT’s history, it belongs to a broader approach. The retailer brought footwear, characters and collectible objects together from its early days, treating those interests as parts of a shared creative world.

That combination explains why sneaker boutique is only a partial description. BAIT also operates as a platform for pop-culture projects. Someone interested in a character figure and someone studying a sportswear archive can find different reasons to pay attention to the same release.

From online retail to a physical home

The first BAIT opened in Diamond Bar, California, in October 2012, connected with PickYourShoes.

A physical shop can bring objects and activities together. That possibility changes the relationship with a selection previously encountered only on a screen.

Patch recorded a Street Fighter anniversary party among the early events. Video games already participated in that identity.

Relationships that predated the storefront

Eric Cheng told Sneaker News in 2013 that his ASICS relationship came through PickYourShoes.

This provides another way to read BAIT’s beginnings. A new name can arrive with established relationships and accumulated knowledge. Its early collaborations were connected to commercial work that existed before the first physical store opened.

It also demonstrates that curation is not only about selecting the next popular release. Identifying a less familiar model and understanding how to present it requires attention to a brand’s archive, its distribution and the interests of the people following it. That work is less visible than a finished collaboration, but helps explain how one becomes possible.

Phantom Lagoons and the shoe itself

Cheng selected the GEL-Saga for Phantom Lagoons because he considered it less explored. Its panels offered scope for contrasting colors and materials.

The project reveals a side of BAIT that does not rely on recognizable entertainment characters. The central reference can be the shoe itself: its construction, textures and possibilities that previous collaborations have not explored. A story matters, but it still needs to work with the object being designed.

Toy Story becomes a product language

A partnership with Disney and Pixar brought Woody and Buzz into a Reebok Instapump Fury project, alongside clothing. Launch coverage in 2019 documented the relationship between BAIT and the Toy Story characters as part of a broader collection.

The appeal is not limited to spotting a familiar image. A character supplies colors, shapes and small details that can be translated into footwear. For a fan, wearing the result offers a different relationship with something previously encountered mainly on a screen or a shelf.

The connection between ASICS archive research and Toy Story is therefore more coherent than it first appears. Collecting can involve technical knowledge, visual taste, personal memory and affection for fictional worlds. BAIT found a retail identity where those motivations overlap, rather than insisting that each interest belongs in a separate department. Its history becomes clearest when the products are read through those connections.
