In 2021, an Air Jordan 3 collaboration shifted attention toward the women who had helped shape its creator’s life. Raised by Women was more than a colorway name: it supplied the interpretive key to an A Ma Maniére project connecting a luxury presentation with personal history.

Understanding the boutique means starting before that release and looking toward Atlanta. A Ma Maniére established its origins there in 2014, developing a distinct identity within the retail world associated with James Whitner.

Beginning in Atlanta

The official Atlanta store page places the brand’s beginnings on Marietta Street. The address remains a historical reference, but the concept cannot be fully described as a shelf of difficult-to-find sneakers.

A Ma Maniére works through relationships between footwear, clothing and presentation. In that context, luxury need not be understood only as price. It can also be read through the attention given to narrative, material combinations and the way a collection is photographed and explained.

Raised by Women and family memory

Speaking to Atlanta broadcaster WABE in April 2021, Whitner described the Air Jordan 3 as a tribute to his mother and to Black women. His memory of the first Jordan she had bought him connected a widely recognized product with an experience from his upbringing.

Women were also centered in the presentation and initial access process. Hypebeast’s interview described an early raffle for women and extended sizing for the collection.

Those choices matter because the tribute was not limited to campaign language. The way the launch was organized formed part of the proposal. For sneaker enthusiasts, this raises a question more interesting than simply counting pairs: whom does a collection seek to acknowledge, and how does that intention become visible?

A decade expressed through a collection

The tenth-anniversary celebrations introduced While You Were Sleeping. The project brought together models from Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse alongside film and presentation activities, extending the narrative beyond one silhouette.

That development helps distinguish A Ma Maniére from a shop that merely receives releases. Its role includes building a language capable of moving between shoes with different origins. The challenge becomes maintaining an identity across several objects, rather than choosing only one model to reinterpret.

For someone interested in collaborative design, that is a productive way to look at the collection: not as interchangeable editions, but as different surfaces carrying a related creative direction.

Reading the trajectory

Someone arriving through the Air Jordan 3 can discover that the shoe belongs to a longer sequence of decisions about memory, audience and presentation. A reader interested in fashion may take the opposite route, beginning with the store’s environment and arriving at footwear.

A Ma Maniére’s story creates room for both approaches. Atlanta provides a concrete starting point, while the collaborations offer chapters through which to follow its development. Rather than using the boutique’s name as shorthand for hype, it is more revealing to examine which stories it chooses and how those choices appear in its products.
