Nearly 500 white replicas of an Air Jordan 1 became part of the ceiling in Kith’s expanded Manhattan store in 2014. The installation, developed with Snarkitecture, took a familiar sneaker silhouette out of the display rack and turned it into architecture. It was an unusually clear statement of what the store wanted to do: make the surroundings as memorable as the merchandise.
That idea provides a useful route through Kith’s retail history. Collaborations have supplied its shops with recognizable products, but the shops have also been creative projects in their own right. Changes in scale, materials and food offerings reveal how the company built a world around shopping. The Manhattan flagship makes those changes particularly easy to follow because its addresses and successive redesigns are well documented.
A retailer’s education
Ronnie Fieg established Kith in New York City in 2011 after years at footwear retailer David Z. His company biography traces a path from stockroom work at 13 to chief buyer. That background helps explain a business built around choosing and presenting products: buying teaches a retailer to think about how one item sits beside another and how a customer might respond to the combination.
Kith’s early Manhattan location was at 644 Broadway. The 2014 expansion connected its footwear and apparel spaces through a new entrance on Bleecker Street. Snarkitecture’s work gave the project a distinctive visual language, including the white sneaker installation. The shop could communicate its enthusiasm for footwear through an object that nobody would take home in a shoebox.
This is an important distinction in Kith’s development. As its own clothing joined products from other labels, the store needed to express a coherent point of view across different makers. Architecture offered a shared setting. Materials, lighting and the arrangement of objects could make a mixed assortment feel intentionally assembled without requiring every item to carry the same logo.
A reason to linger
Kith Treats arrived in 2015. According to the company’s account, Fieg’s childhood fascination with cereal eventually became a cereal-and-ice-cream concept inside its retail world. The idea introduced an everyday pleasure into a setting associated with highly anticipated fashion releases. Food also gave a store visit a different rhythm: there was something to do besides inspect clothing or compare shoes.
The three-story Manhattan flagship at 337 Lafayette Street opened in 2017. Its design with Snarkitecture received attention from Architectural Digest, which documented the integration of merchandise and Kith Treats within the expanded space. The move gave the retail concept a larger stage. It also established an address that should be distinguished from the original Broadway shop when telling Kith’s history.
In December 2023, Kith returned to 644 Broadway with a flagship dedicated to Kith Women. A PlantShed partnership brought a café and plants into the project. The return turned an early chapter into a different kind of store, showing how an address could be reused as the company’s audience and categories developed. It also continued the effort to give people reasons to spend time around the retail offering.
New York as a collaborator
The city appears in Kith’s work through institutions as well as architecture. In 2022, a collection made with Russell Athletic drew on the identities of Queens College and Brooklyn College, both part of the City University of New York. College crests and graphics connected the clothes to places with an existing community of students and graduates.
CUNY reported that Kith’s Kinnect Foundation awarded $25,000 to each college foundation, with sales proceeds also supporting scholarships. This is a concrete example of the brand’s local relationships extending beyond visual references. The collaboration connected a fashion collection to financial support for education, giving the project an outcome that could be described more precisely than general claims about community.
Its reception was not uniformly celebratory. The Brooklyn College Vanguard recorded social-media reactions questioning prices and the attention given to only certain campuses. That response belongs in the cultural story, too. A collaboration can create pride and visibility while raising questions about who can afford the resulting products. The meaning of a city-based collection is shaped partly by the people whose institution appears on it.
Rewriting the flagship
The Lafayette flagship reopened in May 2025 with another substantial redesign. The new presentation placed Kith menswear on the first floor, a multi-brand assortment on the second and footwear on the third. Walnut, lighter wood and stone replaced the idea of a sneaker shop as a neutral container with a more carefully differentiated sequence of rooms.
The reopening also connected the store to a Ronnie Fieg and New Balance ABZORB 2010 release and a Metropolitan Cronut created with Dominique Ansel. A street-facing Treats window brought the food offering directly to the facade. These details show several parts of Kith’s retail practice converging at one event: architecture, footwear and hospitality could each provide a reason to pay attention.
Kith’s store history is therefore best understood through its repeated decisions about setting. The cast sneaker overhead, the cereal counter and the return to Broadway each change the relationship between an object and the place where it is sold. The result is a retailer whose identity is carried by the experience it designs around its assortment, with New York supplying both the physical ground and a community capable of answering back.
