A tenth signature model invites a retrospective, but the KD10 approached that milestone through refinement. Its defining features were already part of the conversation around Durant’s shoes: a low collar, visible cushioning and a knitted upper. The interesting change was how the lacing crossed that upper. Broad loops made the fastening system a major visual element, giving the shoe a recognizable profile even in quiet, nearly monochromatic colors. The result reads like a mature design deciding which ideas deserve more development. Looking at the KD10 beside earlier strapped KDs reveals a continuing concern with holding the foot without returning to the same exterior solution every season.

When the model arrived

The KD10 reached retail in May 2017. Anniversary launched on May 26, followed by Still KD on June 1 in the United States; other markets and wider distribution used different dates. The anniversary referred to Durant’s relationship with Nike, which began in 2007, rather than ten full years since the first KD retail release.

Design, materials and cushioning

Leo Chang combined zoned Flyknit with a conspicuous lacing system and full-length Zoom Air. Nike described different yarn properties in different areas, balancing stretch with containment. The cushioning continued the KD9 direction; this was not the first Flyknit KD.

What makes this generation distinctive

The Anniversary pair is particularly useful for understanding the design. Most of the shoe stays visually restrained, while its multicolored Swoosh carries the historical reference. That separation lets a small detail tell the story without overwhelming the shape. Still KD takes the opposite collecting approach: it makes the construction itself easier to read because the pale palette competes less with the lacing. Oreo then demonstrates how strongly the knitted surface can change the same silhouette. Together, these editions show that the KD10’s identity did not depend on an elaborate print or an entirely new component.

Reading the design in context

The KD10 is also a useful study in how a fastening system changes the reading of a sneaker. Seen from above, the laces occupy a large share of the upper, creating a series of broad crossings rather than a narrow central channel. From the side, the anchors connect those crossings to the base. The result makes tension visible: even without pulling the laces, a viewer can understand that the upper is meant to be drawn around the foot. This is a different visual strategy from hiding support inside a smooth shell. It helps explain why a pale launch colorway could work so effectively. There was already enough structure to distinguish the shoe without adding a complicated graphic. In a chronological display, the KD10 belongs beside the KD9 because they share a material direction, but its lacing deserves its own close look. The family resemblance is real; the handling of that resemblance is the design story.

Versions and the original release family

The standard KD10 was already low-cut. The consulted launch record does not establish a separate KD10 Elite or a newly launched KD10 Low family. Limited, premium and team labels should be checked against the actual style code rather than treated automatically as new performance constructions.
